lab Dysprosium 2012

Dysprosium nanoparticles for T2 MRI

Kattel and colleagues made D-glucuronic-acid-coated dysprosium oxide nanoparticles (about 3.2 nm) and dysprosium hydroxide nanorods as T2 MRI contrast agents, with a decent r2 and negligible r1 relaxivity.

As reported in: Kattel, Park, Xu et al. (2012). Paramagnetic dysprosium oxide nanoparticles and dysprosium hydroxide nanorods as T2 MRI contrast agents. Biomaterials. doi:10.1016/j.biomaterials.2012.01.008

review Rubidium 2012

Rubidium-82 PET for heart disease

Mc Ardle and colleagues pooled 15 PET and 8 SPECT studies and found rubidium-82 PET detected obstructive coronary artery disease with 90% sensitivity and 88% specificity, versus 85% and 85% for technetium-99m SPECT.

As reported in: Mc Ardle, Dowsley, deKemp et al. (2012). Does Rubidium-82 PET Have Superior Accuracy to SPECT Perfusion Imaging for the Diagnosis of Obstructive Coronary Disease?. Journal of the American College of Cardiology. doi:10.1016/j.jacc.2012.07.038

review Scandium 2012

Scandium-44 for PET

Roesch reviewed scandium-44, a PET radionuclide with a 3.97-hour half-life available from titanium-44/scandium-44 generators, including first imaging uses in small animals and humans.

As reported in: Roesch (2012). Scandium-44: Benefits of a Long-Lived PET Radionuclide Available from the 44Ti/44Sc Generator System. Current Radiopharmaceuticals. doi:10.2174/1874471011205030187

commercial Barium 1997

Barium sulfate for leaks after surgery

Gollub and Bains reviewed 29 postoperative esophagograms made with diluted barium sulfate that showed leaks; no patient developed mediastinitis, and they concluded barium can be used safely to rule out leaks after esophageal surgery.

As reported in: Gollub, Bains (1997). Barium sulfate: a new (old) contrast agent for diagnosis of postoperative esophageal leaks.. Radiology. doi:10.1148/radiology.202.2.9015057

review Indium 1994

Indium-111 white cell scans

Datz reviewed indium-111-labelled leukocytes for detecting infection, which had a sensitivity of 90% to 95% when imaged 24 hours after injection.

As reported in: Datz (1994). Indium-111-labeled leukocytes for the detection of infection: Current status. Seminars in Nuclear Medicine. doi:10.1016/s0001-2998(05)80225-9

lab Fluorine 1978

Fluorine-18 labelled glucose analog

Ido and colleagues described a synthesis of fluorine-18-labelled 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose, a labelled glucose analog needed for studying local glucose metabolism in the brain.

As reported in: Ido, Wan, Casella et al. (1978). Labeled 2‐deoxy‐D‐glucose analogs. 18 F‐labeled 2‐deoxy‐2‐fluoro‐D‐glucose, 2‐deoxy‐2‐fluoro‐D‐mannose and 14 C‐2‐deoxy‐2‐fluoro‐D‐glucose. Journal of Labelled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals. doi:10.1002/jlcr.2580140204

lab Thallium 1975

Thallium-201 heart imaging

Strauss and colleagues found thallium-201 concentrated in mouse heart muscle more than potassium-43 or rubidium-81, matched regional blood flow in dogs, suggesting it could be used to evaluate regional myocardial perfusion.

As reported in: Strauss, Harrison, Langan et al. (1975). Thallium-201 for myocardial imaging. Relation of thallium-201 to regional myocardial perfusion.. Circulation. doi:10.1161/01.cir.51.4.641

Technetium-99m DTPA scans

Hauser and colleagues combined technetium-99m with the chelating agent DTPA to make an agent for scanning the brain and kidneys; about 90% was cleared by the kidneys within 24 hours.
