Liver and digit-tip regeneration in mammals

Regeneration: basic research on living systems, not technology.

Also: hepatectomy, digit tip

Liver regeneration

Michalopoulos reviewed how the liver restores lost mass after partial removal using all its mature cell types.

As reported in: Michalopoulos (2007). Liver regeneration. Journal of Cellular Physiology. doi:10.1002/jcp.21172

Nail stem cells drive digit regrowth (mice)

Takeo and colleagues showed in mice that Wnt activation in nail stem cells is needed for the digit tip to regrow; amputations below them fail to regenerate.

As reported in: Takeo, Chou, Sun et al. (2013). Wnt activation in nail epithelium couples nail growth to digit regeneration. Nature. doi:10.1038/nature12214
