Ribosome structure: uses in research

Also: ribosome, 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Ramakrishnan, Steitz, Yonath

Ribosomes are the cell's protein factories. Atomic structures of ribosome subunits, solved around 2000, led to the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Venki Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath.

Large ribosomal subunit at 2.4 Å

Ban and colleagues solved the atomic structure of the large ribosomal subunit of Haloarcula marismortui, showing its RNAs fit together like a 3D jigsaw and that the active site where proteins are joined is free of protein.

As reported in: Ban, Nissen, Hansen et al. (2000). The Complete Atomic Structure of the Large Ribosomal Subunit at 2.4 Å Resolution. Science. doi:10.1126/science.289.5481.905

Small ribosomal subunit at 3 Å

Wimberly and colleagues reported the crystal structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit from Thermus thermophilus at 3 Å resolution.

As reported in: Wimberly, Brodersen, Clemons et al. (2000). Structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit. Nature. doi:10.1038/35030006
