Iron sulfide scales

Warén and colleagues described a vent gastropod with dermal sclerites mineralised with iron sulfides, mainly pyrite plus magnetic greigite; iron sulfide was not known as a skeletal material in animals.

As reported in: Warén, Bengtson, Goffredi et al. (2003). A Hot-Vent Gastropod with Iron Sulfide Dermal Sclerites. Science. doi:10.1126/science.1087696

How the armor stops attacks

Yao and colleagues used nanoscale tests and simulated predator attacks to show the multilayered iron-plated shell of Chrysomallon squamiferum resists penetration, dissipates energy and stops cracks.

As reported in: Yao, Dao, Imholt et al. (2010). Protection mechanisms of the iron-plated armor of a deep-sea hydrothermal vent gastropod. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. doi:10.1073/pnas.0912988107
