Walker and colleagues introduced the wMel Wolbachia strain into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes; it blocked dengue, caused the reproductive effect cytoplasmic incompatibility with minimal apparent cost, and spread through caged populations.
As reported in: Walker, Johnson, Moreira et al. (2011). The wMel Wolbachia strain blocks dengue and invades caged Aedes aegypti populations. Nature. doi:10.1038/nature10355
Utarini and colleagues ran a cluster-randomized trial in Yogyakarta, Indonesia; releasing wMel-carrying mosquitoes gave 77.1% protective efficacy against confirmed dengue and 86.2% against dengue hospitalization.
Built / tested: wMel mosquito releases
